With this in mind, we turned to some of our favorite designers and interior experts to tell us what bedroom design trends they predict for the coming year. Gena Kirk, VP of corporate design at KB Home, agrees. “Adding a variety of lighting, from overhead lighting to pendant lighting over the nightstands, will allow you to easily adjust to how you are using the space," she says. “Now more than ever, it’s important that we have spaces of respite, like our bedrooms, that fit our unique needs to relax and retreat,” Kirk tells us. “This means something different to everyone—whether it’s investing in more closet space or organization, a luxury item like new bedding, or adding smart technology to make life easier, like automated shades or remote lighting. The trend is to focus on what you need.” Designer Anastasia Casey also predicts uses of color that we haven’t seen before. “Layered, saturated, and monochromatic color will be big—think 8 shades of olive, all slightly off from each other," Casey shares. Cristina Lehman of C. Lehman Home agrees, too, noting that these choices will all lead to a change in bedroom ambiance. “I think we’ll start seeing more moodier, darker colors in bedrooms. People will be more willing to try out darker paint on the walls, darker bedding, or darker curtains.” When it comes to quality versus quantity, designers are opting for high-quality, thoughtful decor all the way. Phillips says that when it comes to how people implement this, it will all come down to finding inspiration. “Unique items, big and small, that are inspired by favorite hotel or Airbnb stays will be the priority,” she says. “Adorn the wall with photographs from a recent trip to Greece that you finally properly framed. Take inspiration from the color palette to determine a new rug or bed linens so the room feels fresh.” “When it comes to design trends in the bedroom, one thing that we have seen is floral and striped bedding,” they tell us. “We’re excited to mix our timeless neutral designs with florals and stripes. We like to stick to a neutral palette that allows our customers to change out smaller items like throws and pillows to stay on trend.” Casey agrees. “I think we’ll be seeing way more patterns introduced in the bedroom," she says. “I think linen will still rule the world, but I’m excited to see brands pushing more plaids, stripes, and florals out on their linen products.” “Furniture will continue to focus on curves and scallop details, but in larger scales than what we’ve been seeing in 2022,” Casey says. “I think we’ll see way more of that moving forward." “Next year will be all about wallpaper,” Phillips says. “Use beautiful murals and interesting patterns to create a room with visual interest.” “We’ve also seen wallpaper patterns and prints resurge in popularity,” Kirk says. “Consider adding an accent wall with a bold pattern in neutral colors to create whimsy and character without overwhelming the space.” “In 2023, I expect to see more embellishments on bedroom window treatments, from fringe trim on drapery leading edges to scalloped edge roman shades and shaped cornices,” Ogilvie says. “These details make bedrooms more personalized and add punch to simpler, more streamlined alternatives.” Alex McBride, the design program manager at Vacasa, agrees. “I think the very nature-driven, naturally organic aesthetic in bedrooms will continue to flourish in 2023," she says. “We see this in the popularity of brands like Jenni Kayne Home, The Citizenry, and Parachute. As the emphasis on wellness strengthens in our everyday lives, so too does the need for a relaxing and tranquil space to unwind.”
