Made in Portugal and constructed from Egyptian cotton, these towels are renowned for their unsurpassed absorbency and softness. Luxurious linens certainly don’t come cheap. Just over $100, the Abyss Super Line Towel is one of the most expensive offerings in our roundup. If you’re going to drop that much cash on a bath towel, you want to be sure you’re getting your money’s worth. We put the Abyss Super Line Towels to the test, using them daily after showering. Assessing components like material, design, texture, absorbency, we determine if they are worthy of their incredibly steep price tag. Keep reading to see if this luxury line of towels is worth the splurge.
Material: Thin yet absorbent
Abyss Super Line Towels are made from long-staple Egyptian cotton—which, according to the manufacturer, results in a more resistant and smoother thread when twisted. Although the pile is tall, the towel isn’t all that thick. In fact, compared to most of our other towels, it’s actually on the thinner side. Despite its thin build, we were thoroughly impressed by its absorbency. It’s more absorbent than any towel we’ve used in the past. We were able to dry ourselves off in half the time it would have taken with our other towels. This towel doesn’t seem to get any heavier when it’s wet. The surface stays pretty dry after absorbing water too. After drying off from our shower, we wore it around the house for a bit. The towel kept us warm, dry, and comfortable. We reused them several times without noticing any musty odors.
Colors: An extensive selection
These bath towels come in 33 colors, offering you an excellent selection to choose from. Neutral shades like ivory and linen beige will match most bathroom decor, while vibrant colors such as turquoise and grenadine will add a bolder splash of color. We ordered our bath towels in platinum silver, which is a subdued shade of gray. If you’re looking to expand your choice of linens in the home, Abyss offers matching hand towels, washcloths, and tubmats.
Texture and Design: Thin and lightweight
Considering their hefty price, we were surprised the Abyss Super Line Towels weren’t all that plush. They are soft and pleasant to the touch, but they were thinner than we expected. That said, the thinner texture certainly has its perks: This towel is ideal for summer use and warmer climates. People that don’t like bulky towels will likely appreciate its texture. Conversely, those who prefer plush towels should explore other options. With a terry texture, rounded edges, and a 5-inch dobby border on one end, the Abyss Super Line Towel is fairly basic-looking in terms of design. The dobby border on other brands of towels that we own feels a bit coarse, but the Abyss towels are consistently soft throughout. These towels have a GSM of 700, which means they fall within the luxury category. GSM (grams per square meter) refers to the density of the towel. A towel with a higher GSM is generally heavier and more absorbent. The lower count for a towel is 300 to 400 GSM, 400 to 600 classifies as medium weight, while 600 to 900 is considered luxurious. We were disappointed in the construction and quality. Upon removing one of the towels from its packaging, we noticed a few loose threads—each about 7 inches long. We snipped them off with scissors, and we didn’t spot any more loose threads after that. Measuring 28 inches wide by 54 inches long, we liked that the towels provided full-body coverage. We found they were large enough to wrap ourselves up comfortably. Despite their lighter weight, they kept us warm after stepping out of the shower. If you prefer a bigger towel, Abyss also offers a bath sheet that measures 40 x 72 inches.
Washing: Came out like new
These towels feel soft right out of the packaging. They did not need a break-in period or repeated washings to feel soft. The perfectly matched care label advises to machine wash in hot water and dry on low heat. According to the care instructions, the towels should be washed separately from other textiles and garments. Zippers, hooks, snaps, or other objects could pull and damage the towel. We’re happy to report that after a few cycles of washing and drying, our towels looked as good as new. They also dried faster than our thicker cotton towels. After about 30 minutes in the dryer, the Abyss towels were fully dry, while our other towels were still damp.
Price: Extremely high
One Abyss Super Line towel sells for $105, which is a hard pill to swallow. If you want to purchase an entire set, you will have to shell out some big money. A set of two bath towels, two hand towels, two washcloths, and a bath mat will set you back $534. There are other towel lines that are comparable in quality and available at a much lower price point.
Competition: Other luxury brands are more reasonably priced
Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towels: At $69 for a set of two, Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towels (view on Brooklinen) are drastically cheaper. However, you don’t have to sacrifice on luxury. When compared to the Abyss Super Line, Brooklinen’s offerings seem to be thicker, heftier, and more plush. One reviewer says using the Brooklinen towel is “almost like cocooning yourself in a blanket.” You can purchase the brand’s Super-Plush Towel Move-In Bundle (view on Brooklinen), which includes four bath towels, four washcloths, two hand towels, and a bath mat, for $199. A similar set from Abyss will cost more than four times that amount—a whopping $816. Frontgate Resort Cotton Bath Towels: Starting at $24 for a set of two, Frontgate Resort Cotton Bath Towels (view on Frontgate) are another reasonably priced luxury option. Made from 100 percent Turkish cotton with a GSM of 700, these towels can deliver plushness without breaking the bank. An entire set from Frontgate—which includes two bath towels, two washcloths, and a bath mat—costs about $73, far less than one Abyss towel. We were very impressed by the Abyss Super Line Towels’ softness and absorbency, but we can’t say they are worth the exorbitantly high price tag. Although many users say these towels last for years, we have our doubts concerning quality and construction, especially since right out of the package, one of the towels had loose threads.
