Material and Weave: The softest cotton
Cotton is probably the most common fiber used for sheets, but not all cotton is created equal. These Mayfair Linen sheets are 100 percent Egyptian cotton, which is comprised of long, silky fibers and is regarded as the highest-quality option available. Longer fibers also mean stronger and finer yarns, which results in a light, soft fabric that’s also durable. Cotton is also supposed to make sheets cool and breathable, which our tester confirmed with this set. Weave refers to the knit of the sheets. This set is sateen, which means there are more warp (vertical) threads than weft (horizontal) threads. This particular weave makes sheets soft and silky, with a slight sheen. Thread count refers to the number of threads that compose one square inch of fabric; this number can range from 150 all the way up to 1,000 or more. Texture: Crisp and cozy
The Egyptian Cotton and sateen weave ensure these sheets are silky smooth. They’re not too thin either, meaning they have more durability. Our reviewer said, “Straight out of the package, they feel very thick, crisp, and cool to the touch—like a freshly made hotel bed.”
Washing: Even softer after washing
The sheets are machine washable, and our tester reported they held up well—and even improved after running them through the washer and dryer. “The sheets feel even more comfortable after washing—they maintained their crispness but became a bit softer to the touch, and I imagine they will become increasingly soft over time,” she said. We definitely suggest you wash them before sleeping in them for the first time. “The sheets had a foul odor when I took them out of the packaging,” our tester noted. “The smell went away after I washed them, but it was a strange introduction to the sheets.” Mayfair Linen recommends removing them from the dryer quickly to keep wrinkles at bay, but beware that the original creases might be hard to get out. “The sheets came out of the package with very deep creases/folds, which were not completely eliminated after washing,” our tester said.
