Mayfair Linen Hotel Collection sheets aim to deliver the type of luxury you’d get at a five-star hotel. Made from 100 percent Egyptian cotton, these 800 thread count sateen sheets should hit high marks across the board for quality. In order to figure out how these sheets stack up to competitors in terms of look, comfort, durability, and value, we sent a set home with our tester, who slept on them nightly for several weeks.

Material and Weave: The softest cotton

Cotton is probably the most common fiber used for sheets, but not all cotton is created equal. These Mayfair Linen sheets are 100 percent Egyptian cotton, which is comprised of long, silky fibers and is regarded as the highest-quality option available. Longer fibers also mean stronger and finer yarns, which results in a light, soft fabric that’s also durable. Cotton is also supposed to make sheets cool and breathable, which our tester confirmed with this set. Weave refers to the knit of the sheets. This set is sateen, which means there are more warp (vertical) threads than weft (horizontal) threads. This particular weave makes sheets soft and silky, with a slight sheen. According to the brand, these sheets are also artisan-stitched and hand-inspected to ensure the highest quality possible.

Thread Count: Top-of-the-line

Thread count refers to the number of threads that compose one square inch of fabric; this number can range from 150 all the way up to 1,000 or more. This number can be misleading when picks—extra threads that don’t necessarily add to the feel of the fabric—are twisted into the weft. Still, in general, sheets that are in the 400 to 600 range tend to be very soft. So with an 800 thread count, the Mayfair Linen Hotel Collection sheets are decidedly above average. “The sheets are of standard-to-high quality,” our tester declared. Texture: Crisp and cozy

The Egyptian Cotton and sateen weave ensure these sheets are silky smooth. They’re not too thin either, meaning they have more durability. Our reviewer said, “Straight out of the package, they feel very thick, crisp, and cool to the touch—like a freshly made hotel bed.”

Washing: Even softer after washing

The sheets are machine washable, and our tester reported they held up well—and even improved after running them through the washer and dryer. “The sheets feel even more comfortable after washing—they maintained their crispness but became a bit softer to the touch, and I imagine they will become increasingly soft over time,” she said. We definitely suggest you wash them before sleeping in them for the first time. “The sheets had a foul odor when I took them out of the packaging,” our tester noted. “The smell went away after I washed them, but it was a strange introduction to the sheets.” Mayfair Linen recommends removing them from the dryer quickly to keep wrinkles at bay, but beware that the original creases might be hard to get out. “The sheets came out of the package with very deep creases/folds, which were not completely eliminated after washing,” our tester said.

Color: Lots of options

Key Features: A deep fit and a satisfaction guarantee

As important as comfort is, the fit of your sheets is just as essential as it can make or break the look of your bed or add a bunch of hassle if you’re having to continually adjust. This set comes with a fully elasticized fitted sheet, which is tailored with 15-inch deep pockets that are sized to work with any pillowtop or deep mattress. Our tester confirmed, “The sheets fit my full-size bed quite well. The fitted sheet was deep enough to fit my mattress very comfortably, and the pillowcases and top sheet were all perfect.” Mayfair Linen also promises a 100% satisfaction guarantee—as long as you return the sheets within 30 days—making it worth giving them a try at the very least. Price: High quality doesn’t come cheap

With a retail price of right around $70 (for a Queen bed), these high-quality sheets aren’t cheap. However, for Egyptian Cotton and a sateen weave, the price is fairly standard and definitely not the highest you’ll find.

Mayfair Linen Hotel Collection vs. Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheet Set

Comparing the Mayfair Linen cotton sheets to Booklinen’s luxury cotton set uncovers a couple key differences. The Brooklinen set starts at $129, which is around $50 more than Mayfair Linen. In terms of quality, both sheet sets are made from long-staple cotton with a sateen weave. Brooklinen’s set has a thread count of 480, considerably less than Mayfair Linen’s 800. This means that Brooklinen’s sheets might be ever-so-slightly less soft than Mayfair Linen’s, but they’re most likely going to make up for it in durability. Brooklinen also backs up this claim with a lifetime warranty, compared with Mayfair Linen’s 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Still can’t decide on what you want? Our round-up of the best cooling sheets can help you find what you’re looking for. Our reviewer had somewhat mixed feelings about the overall value, but felt the price could be justified down the road—if they hold up for years to come. “The sheets are of good quality, but I am not certain that they are worth the relatively high price,” she admitted. You won’t be disappointed by the quality, but you might not be blown away, either—considering the price tag.
