Material and Texture: Smooth, sturdy cotton

These sheets are not made with just any cotton but with 100 percent combed cotton, which greatly contributes to its smooth and sturdy feel. Combed yarn is special because it undergoes a combing process that removes shorter fibers and impurities while also lining up the remaining long fibers so that they all run parallel to each other. The resulting strong and compact yarn translates into sturdy fabric. They are also extremely soft to the touch. From the moment we pulled these sheets from the package to when we laid down on them for the very first time, the velvety feel was a major highlight. We would even dare to say that these sheets are almost silk-like. They have a smooth feel with an almost luminous shine similar to silk. But, of course, they feel heavier because they’re made from cotton. We’re not sure how Pinzon was able to achieve this feel with cotton, but they certainly have outdone themselves.

Weight: Substantial

Flannel sheets are measured by their weight—not by their thread count. Typically, a heavier flannel weight suggests a tighter weave that is long-lasting and has a softer, warmer feel. These sheets have a flannel weight of 190 GSM and feel sturdier than most sheets we’ve used before, even after washing.

Washing: Some shedding and color fading after the first wash

So far, we’ve washed these sheets twice according to the recommended settings, which is a cool wash and a low tumble dry. After the first wash, we noticed a lot of lint shed in our lint screen. Some pilling also appeared, and the amethyst color of the floral pattern wasn’t as vibrant after washing, but the sheets remained extremely soft.

Helpful Features: Breathable, but still warming

When it comes to flannel sheets, it’s important that they’re warm but also breathable so you don’t overheat in the night. These sheets deliver on both fronts. At the time of testing, it was still pretty cold where we live, and these sheets kept us plenty warm throughout the night. The smooth and soft texture helped to create a breathable environment that didn’t get too stuffy.

Price: A good price for a luxury experience

There are luxury flannel sheets on the market that cost hundreds of dollars, but the Pinzon 190-Gram Heavyweight Velvet Flannel Sheet Set offers a very similar return for a lower price (starting around $70 for the queen size). It’s certainly not the cheapest option on the market, but in terms of the plush feel and sleek look, it’s worth the slight splurge in our opinion.

Competition: The best option at the best price

Mellanni Flannel Cotton Sheet Set: Mellanni is another bedding company that offers a 100 percent flannel cotton sheet set with an MSRP around $70. We tested the sets, each including a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases, and found that both brands deliver on warmth and breathability. However, Mellanni is missing the velvety smooth texture that can be credited to Pinzon’s combed cotton. Pinzon also has a higher GSM (190 versus Mellanni’s 170 GSM), leading to a more luxurious bedding experience.  The Company Store Legacy Velvet Flannel Set: The Company Store sells a similar flannel sheet set that is pretty well-matched with the Pinzon set. Both are made in Portugal from 100 percent cotton, boasting a velvety softness and a sleek look. They both also deliver on warmth and breathability. After testing the two sets, we found that one of the main differences is the weight of the material and price. The Company Store’s set is slightly heavier than Pinzon’s; we could immediately feel the difference, and it makes a difference in bed as well. We noticed that our temperature was better regulated with the weightier sheets, and overall, we experienced a better night’s sleep with the Legacy set. The Legacy pieces are sold à la carte, with a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases adding up to around $148 for a twin-size bed. Though pricier than the Pinzon, we think the cost is well worth it for a good night’s sleep. If you’re not willing to splurge on a more expensive flannel sheet set but still want a luxe bedding experience, these sheets are for you. They feel both durable and velvety smooth, and they look sleek enough to make you believe they’re worth a lot more.
