With the Pottery Barn 700-Thread-Count Sateen Sheet Set, you’re paying more for a high-quality product. Why is it so important to have solid cotton bedding? Ideally, you’re spending eight hours a day wrapped up in your sheets. Not only can they impact the quality of your sleep, they can also play a role in skin health. Artificial fibers like polyester don’t breathe as well as cotton sheets, so they won’t keep you as cool. Sweating during the night can lead to oily skin and breakouts. Natural fiber sheets are a standout choice for comfort and health, and this 100 percent cotton set from Pottery Barn is a luxurious example. Read on for all the details.

Material: Crisp and luxe

The Pottery Barn sheets feel thick and soft. The solid cotton fabric has a light glossy quality from the sateen finish, but it’s not shiny. The finish provides just enough sheen to catch the light. These sateen sheets have been through a mechanical alteration that compresses the individual cotton fibers. This compression gives the sheets their reflective finish, and also yields a denser, more compact weave. That means that sateen sheets are likely to be more durable and longer lasting than their percale counterparts. If, however, you don’t like a shiny surface, this finish isn’t for you.  The pillowcases and flat sheet are finished with a double pin-tuck hem border. This subtle finish gives the sheet set a polished and pulled together look. The color options are fairly limited, but the available colors are pretty. This set only comes in classic white, smoke gray, porcelain blue, blush, and ivory, which is considerably warmer than the white.  If you’re looking for a fashion statement, these aren’t the sheets for you. If you’re interested in a subtle color to complement your current decor, or a plain sheet to fade into the background, these colors will fit perfectly. In person, the classic white color looks clean and fresh. Although it’s a pure white, the warm undertones keep the set from feeling too cold.

Thread Count: They’re beautiful and they know it

These sheets boast a 700 thread count, and it shows. When you rub them between your fingers, there’s no doubt that the fabric is strong.

Texture: Best of both worlds

The solid cotton fabric is thick and crisp like a sailor’s uniform, but somehow still soft and snuggly like your favorite t-shirt.

Key Features: Fit and smart

A queen sheet set fit nicely on a 10-inch mattress, but the product page states that it could accommodate a mattress up to 16 inches deep. The fitted sheet has tight elastic corners that feel like they will stand up to long-term use without losing their hold. The flat sheet fell several inches past the mattress but wasn’t so long that the sides were visible hanging out from underneath the duvet. That doesn’t matter too much if you have the discipline to properly tuck the sheet under the bed every morning, but if you like to cut corners when you’re throwing your bed together before work, a sheet that’s the right size can save you some time and will still look made up. One nice touch: The fitted sheet comes with tags sewn in to mark the shorter top and bottom sides of the sheets. This eliminates the occasionally frustrating process of making the bed and stretching out your fitted sheet only to find out it’s turned the wrong direction.  On top of that, these sheets come with an “Oeko-Tex Certification” that ensures they’ve been tested for 100 chemicals known to be harmful to humans. You can rest easy knowing that these sheets are pollutant-free and safe for use. The product page also states that the cotton is sustainably sourced, but it doesn’t specify the type of cotton or its origin.

Washing: Built to last

The product page instructs machine washing these sheets on cold and tumble drying on a low setting. It also describes these sheets as wrinkle-resistant. After washing and air-drying, the fabric didn’t have any big noticeable wrinkles, but they also didn’t have the same military crispness that you would find in a hotel. If you’re hoping to achieve that look, you’ll need a high-quality iron. One downside to the density of the cotton, the fabric is so thick that even with the iron on its highest heat setting, we had trouble getting that hotel look.

Price: A little steep

The Pottery Barn 700-Thread-Count Sateen Sheet Set comes with a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and two pillowcases. They’re made of 100 percent woven cotton. This set is regularly priced at $229 for the queen size. If you’re a four pillow person, purchasing two extra pillowcases will cost an extra $45. Monogramming is also available for an additional charge. That’s a pretty serious investment for sheets, but if this is an important purchase to you, this set will deliver a high-quality and lasting product. On the plus side, purchasing from a large company like Pottery Barn ensures that customer service will take care of you if something goes wrong with your purchase.

Pottery Barn 700-Thread-Count Sateen Sheet Set vs. Fieldcrest Supima Classic Hemstitch Sheet Set

When compared to the Supima Classic Hemstitch Sheet Set the price point is the first thing that comes to mind. The Pottery Barn sheets lose a few points for the expense. Although they do hold a few advantages over the Supima set, we’re not sure it’s worth the more than $100 price difference. Like the Supima set, the Pottery Barn sheets come in a sateen finish. However, on the Pottery Barn sheets, the finish is a little more subtle.  The Supima sheets are so shiny that they’re almost reflective, and they have a slightly slippery feel. The Pottery barn set is more glossy than shiny. Instead of the slippery feeling, the fabric is soft and smooth. Side by side, the finishings on the Pottery Barn set are higher-quality. The seams and the elastic are both noticeably thicker.  Interested in reading more reviews? Check out our roundup of the best high thread-count sheets. The Pottery Barn 700-Thread-Count Sateen Sheet Set doesn’t come in sexy packaging and they’re not made by the newest direct-to-consumer startup. If, however, you’re looking to invest in a well-made and classic set, these thick, glossy sheets will make you feel like you’re tucking in at a luxury hotel.
