To cover all of the options out there, we spoke to pro organizing expert and NEAT Method co-founder Ashley Murphy for her advice. Murphy explains that the right option “depends on how you use your space and how much room you have for storage.” A solution that works for one home won’t always work for another, and blanket storage is no exception. While there are bins, boxes, ladders, baskets, and long-term storage solutions available, it’s important to take into account where and how they will function in your living room or bedroom. Our favorite, the Essex Single Storage Ottoman from Target’s Threshold line, doubles as an ottoman, has a built-in lid, and comes in four versatile colors. It can easily blend in with multiple styles of decor, and it looks just as good at the foot of a bed as it does in the middle of a living room. Ahead, we’ve pulled together the best blanket storage solutions for your home. It’s equal parts form and function. It can support up to 250 pounds of weight, so it can comfortably seat most adult guests, and the interior compartment is roughly 22 x 15 inches and 11.5 inches deep. A second, larger size (similar to a standard bench) is also available if you need additional room. As an added convenience, it comes fully assembled, so you can start using it the moment it arrives. The only potential downside we can see is that any belongings displayed on the top (or feet that may be reclining on it) need to be removed before you can access the storage space. That’s small sacrifice, in our opinion. Price at time of publish: $75 The basket is offered in six different color combinations, from white and pink to black and jute. While it’s a great option to store throws and blankets, it’s versatile enough that you can use it for extra baby clothes, decorative pillows, or extra towels, or even as a laundry basket in a guest room if the need ever arises. While it’s moderate in size, it won’t hold all of that at once, but it’s still a practical and polished choice. Price at time of publish: $27 The natural materials and textured aesthetic are super versatile, and the 40-pound weight capacity ensures that it can handle extra toys, pillows, or other additions to blankets stored inside. We also appreciate the convenience of the hinged lid and separate handles. Importantly, Pottery Barn also ensures that it’s responsibly and ethically made. Price at time of publish: $399 This ladder is just over five feet tall, with six rungs that hold 2.2 pounds apiece, and the top rack is made of wood and serves as a chic accent. The versatile ladder will look charming in your living room, family room, entryway, bedroom, or bathroom—it even doubles as a towel rack. Note that it doesn’t require wall mounting, so while it’s convenient to set up, you want to ensure that your placement is safe and secure. Still, if you have eye-catching throw blankets you want on display, this is a great option. Price at time of publish: $66 Handwoven from seagrass, the basket is naturally durable—you’ll be able to fill it up without any issues. Though it has a bit of a larger profile, you won’t have to worry about it taking up too much space wherever you place it. It comes in three colors: natural tan seagrass, black, or a combo of the two. Note that the seagrass construction means there will be some texture, so just be gentle when you’re lifting blankets, to avoid snags. Price at time of publish: $38 The ottoman is offered in three sizes and in multiple upholstery options, so you’re sure to find a combination that works well in your home. Not sure where to start? You can explore the prices at your leisure on West Elm’s website. Note that we previously named it as a Best Splurge, because the combinations start at $190 and can reach $799, but given how many customizable features it has and how it’s a piece that will never go out of style, we think there’s plenty of value. Price at time of publish: $190+ In addition to storage, this chest can even double as seating—all you have to do is place cushions on the lid or add a favorite throw pillow, and you’ll have a bench. Also, keep in mind that assembly is required, so if that’s not your area of expertise, plan to secure the help of a friend or professional. Price at time of publish: $187 Unlike some of the choices we listed, this rack does require installation, so have a drill—or a helper—ready for when it arrives. While it falls in the middle range of prices that we’re featuring, it’s unique in that once it’s in use, you have an artistic piece as well. The amount of blankets it can hold varies, depending on their size and how they’re folded, but your ability to style and show them how you like is part of what we love about it. Price at time of publish: $150 Two sizes are offered, each with a long and easily-accessible zipper opening so you can add or remove contents with ease. It’s also machine washable, but just be sure to take the contents out beforehand. Don’t be surprised if it starts making appearances throughout your home for extra TV or computer seating. Price at time of publish: $30 One nice thing about many types of blanket storage is that they can hold other items, too (unlike, say, a wine storage cabinet or holiday ornament organizer that serve a specific purpose). Before making any purchases, take into account whether you’d like the option to repurpose your storage option down the road or commit solely to something meant for blankets or linens.

Capacity

Be sure to check dimensions before placing an order. Many baskets, bins, and storage containers look a lot larger online than they are in person. On a similar note, ladders, racks, and options with handles often have weight capacities. For example, our pick for Best Floating Rack, the Phillip Stone Minimalist Blanket Storage & Display, can accommodate up to 15 pounds, and the Beachcomber Oversized Lidded Basket from Pottery Barn, our recommendation for Best Splurge, can hold up to 40 pounds. While blankets aren’t typically the heaviest items in your home, it’s well worth double-checking, especially if you want to keep multiple throws together or if you have weighted blankets in your collection.

Material

As with furniture, textiles, and other home goods, the choice of material can affect both the design and durability of your storage. From solid wood and manufactured veneer to woven seagrass and canvas to metal and upholstery, you’ve got lots of options. Look for something that goes with the rest of your furnishings, such as a similar wood finish or a complementing color. And always consider how often you’ll need to access your blankets. Storage options with lids can keep things looking polished in your home, but they can also add a step to pulling out or putting away a blanket. (This is especially important to consider if any of your family members or housemates need reminders to tidy up after themselves.)

Why Trust The Spruce?

Dena Ogden is a lifestyle and commerce writer who’s been writing professionally since 2016 and with The Spruce since August 2022. For this story, she extensively researched blanket storage options currently available at major retailers and evaluated products based on design, features, material, size, and overall value. Dena combed reviews, consulted external sources, and considered the role of blanket organizers in different spaces throughout the home. She’s also the proud owner of her first-ever blanket ladder and is super pleased with the results. According to Murphy, the best way to fold a blanket is to lay it flat on a surface, and then fold it inward so that you only see the smooth folds instead of the edges. “If you are storing more than one blanket, just be sure to fold them all so they end up the same length and width,” she adds. If Murphy’s technique doesn’t suit your blankets, or you don’t have a comfortable space to lay your blankets out as your fold, consider rolling your or trying another Spruce-approved method. Storage bags specifically designed for textile storage can also be a great choice. “A zippered storage bag does the trick when in a closet or under a bed,” she adds. Theresa Holland, a commerce writer specializing in home design and textiles, also weighed in on this piece. She interviewed Ashley Murphy, NEAT Method co-founder and an organizing and folding expert, and also researched the various types, materials, capacities, and styles of blanket storage solutions. Theresa has been writing for The Spruce since 2019, covering furniture, organizational products, cleaning supplies, and bedding.
