Essential oil diffusers can disperse beautiful aromas into your space, and while there are a lot of diffusers out there, most are run by a power cord, which limits where you can put them. The Vitruvi Move Diffuser is a rechargeable, battery-powered diffuser that you can take with you from room to room as you move throughout your home. Prior to getting the Vitruvi, I already had a diffuser in my bedroom that I would occasionally unplug and take with me into the bathroom when I wanted to take a relaxing bath. So I was excited at the thought of the Vitruvi Move’s portability. Would I be able to easily transport aromatherapy from my bedroom to my bathroom without the hassle of unplugging everything and setting it up again? I was eager to find out. Unfortunately, my excitement was put on hold when I took the diffuser out of the box. While everything, aside from the power cord and cube, was assembled and ready to go, Vitruvi recommends fully charging the diffuser before the first use. From start to finish, it took about four hours for the battery to fully charge, which I thought was pretty lengthy. There are two ways to connect the charging cable to the diffuser. You can plug it directly into the diffuser or plug it into the base that the diffuser stands on. For the first charge, Vitruvi recommends connecting directly to the diffuser for a faster charge, but I didn’t notice a significant difference in the charging speed between the two.  Once the diffuser was fully charged, I opened the cover—the top half of the diffuser slides right off—and filled it with water to the max fill line. Vitruvi doesn’t include a filling cup, which would have been a nice touch, but since the diffuser is portable, I brought it right to the sink and poured the water right in from the faucet. After filling the diffuser, I dropped 25 drops—per Vitruvi’s recommendation—of the included essential oil blend into the basin. Once the diffuser is filled up, there’s a button in the back that you use to turn it on. In addition to the power button, there are two other buttons that you can use to choose which program you want to run—four hours of continuous diffusing or eight hours of intermittent diffusing. When it was running, I couldn’t hear the diffuser at all, which was a pleasant surprise. I’ve had other diffusers that are fairly noisy, and while that can serve as a sort of white noise when you’re drifting off to sleep, it’s nice to be able to run the diffuser silently. Aside from the light that illuminates around the center of the diffuser, the only other way to tell the diffuser was on was by looking for the small, almost non-existent stream of diffused oil and water that comes from the top. But even though it was hard to see the diffused droplets, the scent was dispersed well throughout the room. And it’s really easy to move. All I had to do was pick it up from the cradle and carry it to the other room. It stands on its own, so there’s no need to bring the cradle with you if you don’t want to. Just make sure you’re holding the diffuser upright, or it will spill. Another bonus is that it has a modern, sleek design that blends nicely with any decor, so it fits in wherever you bring it. It comes in white, black, fog (gray), and terracotta (brown), so you can choose the one that fits your aesthetic better. I went with the white.

Does the diffuser have timer settings?

The Move Diffuser only has two settings—four hours continuous or eight hours intermittent. I would have loved additional settings, like two hours, or the ability to run intermittently for four hours, but it’s easy enough to turn off the diffuser if you don’t want to have it running the whole time.

How long does a charge last?

A single charge will last through one diffusing cycle, so four hours or eight hours (of intermittent use). You can run the diffuser while it’s plugged into the charger, but if you want to take advantage of its portability, you’ll have to remember to charge it each time you use it.

What is the diffusing capacity?

The Vitruvi Move Diffuser can cover up to 500 square feet of space with scent. If you have a larger room that you want to cover, you can run the diffuser for a couple of hours in one area and then pick it up and move it to another area for a bigger reach.

How does the Vitruvi diffuser work?

The Move diffuser is ultrasonic, meaning that it generates mist via soft vibrations in the water rather than heat. Because of this, the oils (and the plastic) aren’t heated while diffusing, and they remain in their most natural form. The oils themselves never come into contact with any plastic in the diffuser, and the plastic reservoir is BPA-free.

Vitruvi Move Diffuser vs. AromaAllure Essential Oil Diffuser

If you like the idea of a portable diffuser but don’t have the $179 to spend, the AromaAllure Essential Oil Diffuser is another battery-operated option, albeit not as fancy. The AromaAllure Diffuser, which retails for $22, runs on two AAA batteries and doesn’t require any water, so you can really take it with you anywhere.  If you like to diffuse in all areas of your home, or you move from room to room a lot during the day, the Vitruvi Move Diffuser isn’t just a want: it’s a need. It’s whisper-quiet, disperses scent well, and has a modern, sleek design that elevates any decor. While it is on the expensive side, the quality matches the price tag.
