So why should you be adding stools to your indoor garden? We’re here to tell you why.
1. Create Visual Interest
The great thing about these small stools is that they don’t tend to take up much space. You can buy them in varying sizes and heights and most of them will fit really nicely under your plant’s pot. If you have a number of plants in a corner that you love to look at but they’re blending together, elevating them using different stool heights will help separate them out. Start with the tallest plant in the back and end with the shortest in front. Not only will it look really nice and make a statement, but it will also make watering your plants a bit easier so you don’t have to reach over large plants to water the small ones.
2. Give Vines More Space to Trail
While we love to suggest putting vining plants on shelves and mantels or hanging them from the ceiling, for some people it may not be an option. Instead, placing your favorite trailing plant on a stool will give it some more space to grow. You’ll be able to drape the plant and really showcase the gorgeous vines without constantly needing to trim the plant back. This would work really well for pothos, philodendron, and even Ceropegia woodii (string of hearts).
3. Keep Floors and Surfaces Clean
As Gillette notes, damp pots can leave water spots. Placing plants on stools will help save your floors and shelves. This is especially true with terracotta pots, which are made with clay and thus absorb water. This means that they’re great if you’re sometimes prone to overwatering a plant. However, the pots then retain the water and can leave orange residue behind that is really hard to get off of surfaces. Use a small plant stool to ensure that your hardwood floors and carpet stay clean and avoid damage. Always make sure that you have a tray underneath your pots with drainage holes. And if you don’t, pick up your plant and water it in the bathtub or sink and let it dry before putting it on any surface you care about.
4. Create More Space for Larger Plants
There are some plants that just seem to grow and grow and grow. They take up so much space that they can actually become a little bit annoying (but only just a little bit). When that starts to happen you can use a stool to add a little more height to your plant. Adding a few inches could make a huge difference if your plant is constantly knocking into something, or its leaves at at a height where you constantly knock into them. This tip is especially helpful for plants that seem to grow out, instead of up. Monstera deliciosa can do this, so it might benefit from being placed on a stool as it would save you some room.
5. Help Plants Get the Light They Need
If your home doesn’t get the best light but you love houseplants, you can use stools to help get them closer to the windows. It may not seem like it, but the light changes drastically with every inch you move away from a window. Placing your smaller plants on stools will actually help plants get closer to a window. If you have a countertop or table underneath your window but it’s high up, place some stools under your plants so they can get the light they need to thrive. With a plant stool you’ll be able to set them in rows without having them block each others’ light.
